(CoQ10)
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone, is a powerful antioxidant discovered by researchers at the University of Wisconsin in 1957. The name of this supplement comes from the word ubiquitous, which means "found everywhere." Indeed, CoQ10 is found in every cell in the body. It plays a fundamental role in the mitochondria, the parts of the cell that produce energy from glucose and fatty acids.
Studies have shown that using Coenzyme Q10 as an oral supplement can increase energy, improve heart function but also appears to modulate blood pressure by reducing resistance to blood flow. Several trials have reported that supplementation with CoQ10 significantly reduced blood pressure in people with hypertension, usually after ten weeks to four or more months of treatment.
Health Concerns Increase energy, Hypertension, Angina
Warnings Coenzyme Q10 appears to be generally safe with no significant side effects, except occasional stomach upset. However, the safety of CoQ10 supplementation during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unknown and, therefore, should not be used during that time until more information is available. People with severe heart disease should not take CoQ10 (or any other supplement) except under a doctor's supervision.
